Life-Threatening Illness: Metal Guitarist Hospitalized with Bacterial Pneumonia, Health Update Issued

A Metal Guitarist's Battle with Life-Threatening Illness
A prominent figure in the heavy metal scene is currently undergoing a challenging recovery after being hospitalized with a severe case of bacterial pneumonia. The guitarist, Phil Fascinana, has been at the center of concern as he fights for his life. His band, Malevolent Creation, made the announcement in mid-July that Fascinana was admitted to the hospital due to a critical condition caused by the infection, which had spread to multiple organs.
The band shared updates on their Facebook page on July 17, stating that Fascinana was in critical condition. They mentioned that his family had been informed and would be making decisions regarding his next steps based on what is best for his health. The band expressed deep sorrow over the situation, emphasizing that it was life-threatening.
Following the initial hospitalization, Fascinana was transferred to the ICU. He was placed in an induced coma to prevent any significant strain on his cardiovascular system during intravenous treatment. After several days, he emerged from the coma and remained in the ICU until the end of July.
Recovery and Rehabilitation
As the guitarist continues to recover, the bandmates have shared positive news about his progress. Fascinana is now undergoing breathing rehabilitation at a smaller facility. He has regained his proper lung capacity, and the musicians are optimistic about his recovery. “It appears that he has beaten the bacterial infection and is showing positive signs every day!” they stated. “He will remain in the hospital for a short while longer, but all signs point to a solid recovery.”
A Personal Statement from the Guitarist
While recovering from the infection, Fascinana released a statement addressing his recent hospitalization. “As of today, August 1st, I am having the last of my tests, and if all is good, I will be released on Monday or Tuesday at the latest,” he shared.
Fascinana explained that he is unsure of how he contracted the infection. However, he mentioned that his lungs were filled with blood for some time. “I have to see doctors every month concerning injuries I received in a car accident in 2021,” he said. “And none of the doctors I see that check your blood as well as other vitals ever detected anything. Even after complaining about just generally feeling constantly sick and having tons of X-rays, MRIs, and just general routine doctor visits.”
The Doctor’s Diagnosis
The guitarist noted that the doctors recently caring for him recognized the severity of his condition immediately. “After being in a coma for 8 days, I was told what was going on,” he continued. “And of course I laughed and said yeah right! One of the doctors asked me to spit on the ground, and I did, and sure as s— it was pure blood. My lungs were filled with blood and I was dying.”
Fascinana added that a lot of work had to be done to clear his lungs and that strong antibiotics were used. “But right now, I am getting ready for a bunch of tests concerning my black heart. If all goes well, I will be flying home on Monday or Tuesday.”
Looking Ahead
Despite the challenges, Fascinana remains hopeful. “I have to take things day to day, but I will be on tour with Krisiun in Brazil in September and our North American Tour in October,” he said. “What a wild ride I had to experience the last 4 weeks, but I’m back baby!!!”
