Kelly Clarkson's Ex, Brandon Blackstock, Passes Away at 48
Brandon Blackstock, the ex-husband of singer Kelly Clarkson and the father of her two children, passed away on August 7 after a long battle with cancer. He had been diagnosed three years prior and spent that time bravely facing the illness. His death came as a shock to many, especially his family and fans.
Clarkson shared the news of Blackstock’s passing in an Instagram post the day before his death, on August 6. In the message, she announced that she would be postponing the remaining dates of her residency in Las Vegas. She explained that she needed to be fully present for her children during this difficult time. Her post resonated deeply with fans, who flooded the comments section with messages of support and condolences.
Fans expressed their sympathy and admiration for Clarkson, emphasizing the importance of being there for her children. One fan wrote, “Those kids need you more than we do! Go be the best momma! Best wishes to all involved ❤️🙏.” Another added, “Kelly, your family, esp your kids come first! That’s what makes you so special!”
Another fan commented, “My deepest condolences to you, the kids & your whole family. I’ve always admired you for doing the right thing regardless of things that have happened to you. Your true fans know you, love you and will be here for you until the end. Sending you the biggest hug. 🫶🏽”
Clarkson’s statement was heartfelt and sincere. She apologized to those who had purchased tickets to the shows and thanked them for their understanding and support. Her words reflected her deep commitment to her children and her desire to focus on their well-being during this challenging time.
A representative for Blackstock’s family confirmed the news of his death in a statement released the following day. The statement read, “It is with great sadness that we share the news that Brandon Blackstock has passed away. Brandon bravely battled cancer for more than three years. He passed away peacefully and was surrounded by family. We thank you for your thoughts and prayers and ask everyone to respect the family's privacy during this very difficult time.”
Blackstock leaves behind four children: River, 11, and Remington, 9, from his marriage to Clarkson; and Savannah and Seth from a previous relationship. He also became a grandfather in 2022 when his eldest child, Savannah, gave birth to a son named Lake.
Clarkson and Blackstock were married in October 2013. The "Since You've Been Gone" singer filed for divorce in 2020, and the process was finalized in 2022. In a 2023 interview, Clarkson spoke about the challenges of going through a public divorce. She mentioned that the decision wasn’t made overnight and that she wanted to make the process as beautiful and positive as possible.
“Sometimes that just doesn’t happen,” she said, reflecting on the complexities of ending a long-term relationship. Her honesty and vulnerability resonated with fans, who continue to support her through every stage of her life.
