Deion Sanders' Bladder Cancer Battle Revealed

Deion Sanders Shares His Battle with Bladder Cancer
Deion Sanders, the head coach of the Colorado Buffaloes, has opened up about his ongoing health challenges, revealing that his condition is more serious than many had anticipated. The situation led him to step back from the start of the preseason, entrusting his assistant coaches with the responsibility of leading summer practices. This decision sparked curiosity and numerous questions, which Sanders was ready to address.
During a press conference on July 28, Sanders disclosed that he had been battling bladder cancer throughout the offseason. He underwent surgery to have his bladder removed, a procedure that has significantly impacted his daily life. Dr. Janet Kukreja, director of urological oncology at the University of Colorado Cancer Center, confirmed that Sanders is now “cured” from the cancer.
“Whenever we hear the word [cancer], it’s usually a life sentence attached to it,” Sanders said, expressing his emotional relief. “But not this time. Not this time, because God got me.”
Living without a bladder means Sanders now relies on a urostomy bag, a change that has affected his routine. In recent months, he has lost about 25 pounds, but he remains optimistic. “Slowly but surely, I built myself back up,” he added. “I’m able, I’m strong. It has been a tremendous journey, and I’m truly thankful that God is so good.”
In a social media video posted on July 27, Sanders shared that he had to make a will during this difficult time. “That's not easy at all, to think that you might not be there, but you want to make sure everybody is straight.” Despite this, he kept his diagnosis a secret from his sons: Shilo, 25, Deon Jr., 31, and 23-year-old Shedeur Sanders. However, he did share the news with his daughters, Dieondra, 33, and 21-year-old Shelomi, who have remained by his side throughout the process.
“The process wasn't easy,” he said. “My sons to this day don’t know what’s transpired. I wanted them to really focus on making the team.”
Shedeur, selected by the Cleveland Browns in the fifth round of the 2025 NFL Draft, is currently vying for a spot in the quarterback room. Shilo signed as an undrafted free agent with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Despite his health struggles, Sanders maintained his usual confident demeanor during the press conference. He humorously mentioned the difficulty of urinating and joked that if the media sees “a porta-potty on the sideline, it’s real.”
Coach Prime also confirmed that he is fully back in control of the team. “I don’t rely on [my assistants],” he said. “I’m with them.”
Under Sanders’ leadership, the Colorado Buffaloes achieved a 9-4 record last season, a significant improvement from the 4-8 record the year before. However, the 2025 season presents new challenges. Shedeur is competing for a spot with the Browns, and the 2025 Heisman winner, Travis Hunter, is with the Jacksonville Jaguars.
Sanders’ journey has been one of resilience and faith, and he continues to inspire those around him. His story serves as a reminder of the strength and determination required to overcome adversity.
