Brooke Shields on Pets, Mental Health, and the Power of Saying “No”

Brooke Shields has always been unafraid to speak out about issues that matter. From her early advocacy for women’s mental health and postpartum depression awareness to her work in clean beauty and wellness, she has consistently used her platform to promote transparency and authenticity. Recently, she has expanded her focus to include a new passion: pets.

As a lifelong dog lover and devoted pet parent, Shields has become a vocal advocate for better standards in the pet industry. She believes that pets deserve the same level of care and attention we give to ourselves and our children. Her recent partnership with Prospect Pet is a reflection of this belief, as she works to push for higher quality ingredients and ethical practices in pet products.

A Personal Journey with Pets

Shields’ interest in pet health was deeply personal. She recalls the emotional impact of losing a late dog to cancer, which made her realize how important it is to be informed about the products we use on our pets. “I had a pet who I think could have had many more years had I been more cognizant of what was available,” she says. “Had I known about Prospect Pet earlier, it might have made a difference.”

She also emphasizes the unique bond between humans and their pets. “When your kids leave, your pets become your primary children. And they don’t talk back! Which is really wonderful.” This perspective has shaped her approach to pet care, where she sees animals not just as companions but as integral members of the family.

Why Prospect Pet?

Shields was drawn to Prospect Pet because of its commitment to ethical sourcing, clean ingredients, and holistic care for animals. “I started learning about the farm and what their ethics were,” she explains. “They provide for animal health and mobility, joint mobility, skin, and inflammation. It’s clean and conscious, ethically sourced, and it really directly looks at and treats these animals from the inside out—in a way that is not complicated, is delicious, and safe.”

This alignment with her values made the partnership feel natural. For Shields, it’s about creating a world where pets can thrive just like people do, with access to the best possible nutrition and care.

The Emotional Bond Between Pets and Mental Health

Pets have played a significant role in Shields’ life, offering unconditional love and emotional support. She describes the experience of coming home after a stressful day and being greeted by her dog, Tuzi, as a reminder of the pure, nonjudgmental love that animals offer. “There’s something so refreshing about looking into the eyes of an animal that you’ve come to know—or even an animal you haven’t known,” she says.

Her first dog, Darla, was especially meaningful. During a difficult medical period, Darla remained by her side, providing comfort and reassurance. “She wouldn’t leave. She would crawl up and lick my face and then come back. She always used to sleep in my room. The minute I had a baby, she slept in front of that kid’s door. And you don’t teach her that.”

Breaking Taboos and Advocating for Mental Health

Shields has long been a champion for mental health, particularly in the context of postpartum depression. As one of the first public figures to openly discuss the issue, she helped pave the way for more open conversations around motherhood and emotional well-being. “It’s so common, and we don’t talk about it because our moms didn’t talk about it,” she reflects. “I just didn’t want my children to have that shame.”

She credits the growing openness around postpartum depression to a cultural shift, noting that her book has become a resource for many new mothers. “It’s hard enough being a new mom. There’s something so kind of primal about it, and it feels so much better when you feel supported.”

Aging with Strength and Grace

In addition to her work with pets and mental health, Shields has also been open about aging with strength and grace. She shares that her wellness routine has evolved over time, focusing more on balance and self-care than on perfection. “I enjoy taking care of myself—and I don’t feel like it’s vain anymore,” she says. “The thing that’s really been giving me the most joy is time with my friends.”

She also highlights the importance of exercise, not for appearance but for overall well-being. “If I don’t, I really start bottling up.” Her daily routine now includes spending time with her dog, Tuzi, which she considers a form of healthcare. “Taking Tuzi to the dog park and throwing the ball for her is a form of healthcare for myself, because she’s happy.”

Embracing the Power of “No”

One of the most significant changes in Shields’ life has been learning to say “no.” “There’s something so freeing about not putting yourself in a position to say yes to everything,” she says. “It’s more about time with friends, more time with my dog, more time doing things that give me peace, rather than just racing around trying to be better and be perfect.”
